Where the Fire Has Been

A few men were on a prairie when a fire began blazing through the tall, brown grass. Because the winds were high, the flames were whipping toward them. They knew they could not outrun the flames.

Some shouted, “We’re going to die!” But one man reached into his pockets, took out a book of matches, and set fire to the grass in front of them. A bystander said, “You fool! Now we’re surrounded by fire.” And the fire-starter responded, “I know what I’m doing. Wait until this fire burns a little. Then we’ll stand in the burned-off place. You see, the fire cannot come where the fire has already been.”

In the same way, the fires of God’s judgment fell upon Jesus at Calvary. And there at Calvary is where we must stand, because the fire cannot come where the fire has already been. On that cross Jesus Christ took the judgment you and I deserved. Romans 8:1 says, “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” Praise God for that!
